If so, we can help.

The government set up the Windrush Scheme to help people get the documents they need free of charge.

If you have lost out on things like jobs and healthcare because you could not evidence your right to live in the UK, you may also be able to claim compensation through the Windrush Compensation Scheme.

The government is running an online event on 19 August from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm to help you find out more. To join click here

Download Zoom, then click the link to join our meeting. You do not need to provide your details if you join as a guest. We will also be running a Q&A session during the event, using slido.com which will enable you to ask questions anonymously.

Advisors from the Windrush Scheme will also be on hand to answer questions.

Visit gov.uk/windrush or call UK Freephone 0800 6781925 for more information.

No information provided in relation to an application or query under the Windrush scheme will be passed onto Immigration Enforcement.

Windrush engagement events

Before coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions, the Home Office ran a series of public events around the country to raise awareness of the Windrush Compensation Scheme and the work of the Windrush Taskforce. Engagement events are now taking place online. These events are open to everyone of any nationality.

Home Office staff also present regularly at events set up by external community organisations for the same purpose.

At all events, information is provided on who may be eligible for the Windrush Compensation Scheme, what kinds of losses and impacts it covers and how to apply. There is also an opportunity to ask questions.

Upcoming events

The following online engagement events are organised to help you find out more about the Windrush Compensation Scheme.

Funding for events

The Home Office has funding available for community events. If you are a registered charity or recognised community group and you want to organise an event to provide information about the Windrush Scheme and Compensation Scheme to people in your networks and communities, you can apply for this funding.

Funding is available for venue hire, light refreshments and other associated costs such as projector screens.

Funding is still available to facilitate digital engagement using the same process as above. The reimbursement claims will need to relate to direct costs involved in organising or facilitating an online event and will continue to require invoice evidence, for example, monthly subscription fees for the digital platform used or WiFi boosters. Claims for labour costs and promotional materials are not included in this fund.

Your event should meet the following criteria:

  • to increase awareness of the Windrush Taskforce, the Compensation Scheme and claimant assistance available and encourage eligible people to apply for compensation
  • a representative from the Home Office will be invited
  • it must be open to all members of the public

The Home Office will prioritise funding for events in locations that have not previously held similar events, or with communities who have not yet been reached through such events.

Please email Windrusheventfunding@homeoffice.gov.uk for an application form and further information.

Windrush Taskforce surgeries

The Windrush Taskforce has been travelling the country to explain the scheme and answer individual queries. They have run over 40 surgeries, with the support of local community groups and charities. Events have taken place in churches, community centres, mosques, gurdwaras and local council buildings.

If you are interested in hosting an event in your local community, please contact windrushsurgeries@homeoffice.gov.uk
